FAMILY TRAVEL: ENJOY SELONG BELANAK BEACH WITH KIDS

AUTHOR: D.B. DATE: November 2025

Selong Belanak is the most family-friendly beach in Lombok. It’s one of those rare places where kids can play freely and parents can actually relax. Whether you’re building sandcastles, chasing crabs, or sipping coconuts under a sun umbrella, this beach offers the perfect balance.

Here’s your editorial guide to surviving (and loving!) Selong Belanak with kids — full of parent-approved hacks, cultural charm, and a few moments that might even earn you that elusive two-hour break.

1. Boogie boarding for all ages

Forget the wild surf — Selong Belanak is known for its gentle, rolling waves, perfect for boogie boarding and beginner surf lessons. Even the smallest beach adventurers can try catching their first wave under the guidance of friendly local surf instructors. The surf schools here are laid-back, patient, and used to teaching both fearless five-year-olds and hesitant parents.

2. The legendary sandpit trick

Here’s a top-secret parenting hack that every Selong Belanak regular knows: dig a cozy hole in the soft sand, sit your toddler inside with a few toys or a bucket… and enjoy a rare two-hour coffee break while they’re happily occupied. The sand here is powdery and cool — like nature’s own babysitter.

Bonus: Bring a small bucket for “sand soup” experiments — the local crabs might even join in as the critics.

3. Meet the afternoon water buffalo parade

Around 5 PM, something magical (and very Lombok) happens — local farmers lead their water buffaloes across the beach on their way home. It’s slow, peaceful, and oddly majestic. Kids love it, photographers love it, and it’s one of those “only in Lombok” moments that make this beach so special.

Cultural note: The buffaloes are part of village life here, used for farming and ceremonies — treat them with respect, but feel free to watch and snap photos from a distance.

 4. Crab chase hour (no shells- just scuttles!)

Selong Belanak isn’t a beach of seashells — instead, it’s home to thousands of tiny sand crabs that pop out of their burrows before sunset. They’re fast, funny, and absolutely fascinating to little explorers. Challenge your kids to spot them as they race across the sand — just remind them to be gentle and let the crabs scurry back home afterward.

Parent tip: Bring a small bucket for “catch and release” fun, but mostly enjoy the sight of your kids laughing and running free.

5. Sunscreen, shade & sanity

The Lombok sun doesn’t mess around, so sunscreen is non-negotiable. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming. A wide-brimmed hat, rash guard, and plenty of hydration (see below!) are the key to keeping smiles on tiny faces.

Bonus parent hack: Pack frozen juice boxes — they’ll double as ice packs and cool treats later in the day. Please also use reef safe sunscreens.

6. Fresh coconut time – The beach’s best drink

Forget sugary sodas — nothing beats a fresh young coconut cracked open right in front of you. Warungs line the beach ready to serve pure island refreshment. It’s full of electrolytes, kid-approved, and totally Instagram-worthy. And it keeps you hydrated.

Parent tip: Ask for a spoon after you finish drinking — kids love scooping out the soft coconut flesh (and it buys you another 10 minutes of peace).

7. Afternoon glow & family photos

Selong Belanak’s afternoons are pure magic — low tide reveals a wide stretch of mirror-like sand perfect for family photos, reflections, and barefoot strolls. Locals often come around this time too, enjoying the cooler air and golden light.

Don’t be surprised if friendly locals ask to take pictures with your kids — it’s a genuine gesture of appreciation and admiration for cute little travelers.

It’s part of Lombok’s warm culture of hospitality. Smile, say yes/no sorry, and you might just make a few new friends.

8. Play “Catch a wave”

If your kids love splashing around, turn wave time into a fun game called “Catch a Wave.”

Here’s how: stand together at the edge of the water, wait for a small rolling wave, and let them jump as it passes — laughing, cheering, and seeing who can “catch” the most waves. It’s simple, hilarious, and guaranteed giggles. No need for board but still feels like surfing.

⚠️ Safety first: Always keep an older sibling or adult right beside them. Even though Selong Belanak’s waves are friendly, the ocean still deserves respect. Teach kids to face the sea, hold hands, and never turn their backs on the water.

Final tips for parents

  1. Bring a sarong or big towel — perfect for shade, naps, or impromptu picnics.
  2. Pack snacks and water, though beach warungs serve tasty fried bananas, smoothies and local food.
  3. Don’t rush. Selong Belanak runs on island time — so should you.
