TRAVEL GUIDE

FINDING THE HEART OF NORTH LOMBOK

AUTHOR: A.G. DATE: November 2025

If you’re anything like me, you travel to feel something, to step into places where life moves slower, food tastes like it has a story, and people welcome you not as a customer but as a guest. That’s exactly what I found at Saifana Organic Farm in North Lombok, a place that feels more like a living, breathing ecosystem than a “destination.”

I’d heard whispers from other travellers about “a little regenerative farm at the foot of Rinjani,” but nothing prepared me for how deeply grounding this experience would be.

The Farm Stay: Simple, Honest, Real

From Mataram, it takes about two hours to reach Saifana Organic Farm. The journey itself feels like a slow transition into another world: quiet villages, winding mountain roads dotted with curious monkeys, rice fields shimmering gold in the late afternoon sun, and stretches of volcanic black-sand beaches still untouched by tourism.

By the time you arrive at the farm, the first thing that will strike you isn’t the scenery, it’s the stillness. A kind of peaceful, grounding hum of nature you don’t realise you’ve been craving until you finally hear it again.

There is no formal check-in. Instead you are welcomed with a fresh herbal drink, shown around the gardens, and then gently led to my bungalow.

The wooden bungalows are perfect in their simplicity : crafted by local carpenters, surrounded by banana trees and vegetable beds. No AC, no screens, no distractions. Just a fan, a comfortable bed, a mosquito net, and the sounds of nature at night.

On your first evening, you might find yourself sitting on your berugak (hut), watching the sun sink behind the gardens, listening to ducks quacking somewhere in the agroforest and children laughing in the common space. It’s a moment that gently invites you to slow down.

The farm is run by a family and employs only people from the village, with a special focus on hiring women to offer fair work opportunities and help prevent early marriages.

Saifana isn’t just a farm, it’s a place that supports and uplifts its community.

Farm-to-Table: Food With Integrity

Every meal at Saifana feels special. The menu is simple, but the true magic comes from their farm-to-table meal, which changes each day depending on what the garden has offered that morning.

Breakfast tastes alive: fresh fruit, warm homemade sourdough, wild forest honey, homemade jams, and rich mountain coffee that feels like a gentle wake-up call.

The Highlight: Hands-On Sasak Cooking Class

The real highlight of my stay was the traditional Sasak cooking class, led by two local women, Rinda and Nia. They’re not just cooking instructors, they’re storytellers and guardians of the culture.

The workshop begins slowly, with a conversation. You sit together and talk about Sasak customs, sarong traditions, coffee rituals, and everyday life in Bayan. Then you walk through the gardens to harvest your ingredients. Everything you cook is prepared the traditional way, over firewood, in clay pots, with coconut graters and stone mortars that release the true fragrance of the spices.

By the time you sit down to eat, sharing the dishes you’ve made with your own hands, it no longer feels like a class. It feels like being welcomed into a family.

Life on the Farm: Slow, Intentional, Beautiful

While staying at Saifana, you naturally begin to slow down. You wander through the food forest, past gardens filled with eggplant, cassava, chilies, and herbs you may never have seen before. Time stretches, softens, and becomes gentler.

The common area has a large library with books in many languages, and board games that invite you to share warm, easy moments with other guests.

Everything on the farm is done with deep respect for the land. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is wasted. Every living being has a role in keeping the ecosystem alive : the humans nurturing the soil, the chickens helping make compost, the bees foraging all day, the ducks eating pests in the garden, and the cows providing rich manure.

It’s a small world where everything works together, showing you how beautiful life can be when it’s simple, intentional, and connected.

Saifana as a Base in the North

When you arrive at the farm, you’re given a small booklet filled with helpful tips about the island and all the places worth visiting around the area. Everything is designed to make your stay easy: scooters are available to rent, and the team can arrange a driver or a guide whenever you need one.

Saifana is a perfect base to explore North Lombok. From here, you can visit the cool highlands of Sembalun, start your hike up Mount Rinjani, or head to the famous waterfalls of Senaru, all within comfortable reach.

It’s a peaceful home in the middle of nature, yet close to some of Lombok’s most beautiful adventures.
